10 Tips to improve your relationship with your spouse NOW

So all of us at one time or another, gets into a rut in our significant relationships.  The spark fades, the conversations loose excitement, and the sex feels routine.  We all enter relationships with high expectations of “how it’s going to be” but, then reality hits and we soon find ourselves feeling frustrated and disappointed.  It is easy to fall in love; however it is quite difficult to stay in love.  Have you ever seen a couple in their mid 80’s who still have that spark, respect, and openness in their relationship?  It is a rare find, but I’ll tell you what, when you see it, it’s a beautiful thing.  Here are 10 practical tips that you can utilize to improve your relationship NOW.  Some of these tips are from the research gathered by John Ghottman, word renowned marriage expert.  Feel free to leave your comments or additional tips; we would love to hear from you!

1. Give and receive a lot of “Emotional Bids” every day.  What is an emotional bid? Good question! It is so basic!  An emotional bid is a concept developed by Dr. John Ghottman.  It’s the building block of emotional connection.  A bid is any attempt to keep the relationship moving forward and in a positive direction.  Bids can be verbal, nonverbal, physical, or non-physical.  A bid needs to be received and acknowledged for it to count as a bid.  It can be a gesture, touch, a look, or response.  A bid is perhaps saying hi to your spouse and they saying hi back, touching your partners leg and they smile.  Asking your wife a question and she answersIt is any form of connection made where the other person acknowledges the connection.  The Happily married couple engages one another as many as 100 times in 10 minutes during a dinner conversation.  The couple headed for divorce engages only 65 times in ten minutes.  So bid and bid some more!!!!

2. Kiss every day for at least 10 seconds.  Okay so this may sound silly, but the research shows that couples that connect through physical touch every day are happier overall in their relationships.  So plant a big one on your spouse tonight!

3. Say you’re sorry sincerely when you have made a mistake.  We all make mistakes and often time’s bitterness grows in relationships when you do not make the reconciliation necessary to let the other person know you are sorry.

4. Compliment your partner at least once a day.  For every time you criticize your partner, you should be complimenting them at least 3 times.

5. Date your spouse.  Reserve 1 day each week where you and your spouse go out on a date.  Don’t have money!  No biggie, create fun frugal dates where you don’t have to spend money.  Like packing a picnic driving close to the airport and watch planes come in!

6. Pray together.  The saying, “a couple that prays together stays together” is so true.  In prayer, we are presenting our requests to God and we can pray for our spouse, family, and friends.  Pray works like glue in a relationship, it keeps us unified.

7. Spend at least 20 minutes each day talking to one another. (Not about the kids).  Ask questions like you did on your first couple dates; get to know each other in new ways.

8. Talk openly and honestly about your relationship.  Be honest with one another about your preferences, likes, and dislikes, this includes the sexual part of your relationship.  Do not take it personally if your spouse does not like something sexually; be open to feedback and trying something different.

9. Serve together.  Service to others is a wonderful thing.  Get involved in a community event or an outreach event at your church.  Through serving we can get outside of ourselves.  In my opinion, prayer and service can work as a wonderful cure for selfishness.  We are all selfish at times, but we can do things to put others first.  Ironically, when we start to put others first, we feel happier about our own lives.

10.) Fight fair.  This is so important!  Its value can not be undermined.  I have seen countless couples get stuck in the bickering game with no real solutions, it’s heartbreaking.  I found a wonderful article on fighting fair from the University Of Texas- Austin Counseling Department.

That’s all for now, have a great week everybody!

10 Tips That Can Change Your Life in 10 Seconds or Less

1. Drink Your Milk. Think you’re getting a nutritional boost from your morning cereal? Up to 40 percent of the vitamins in fortified cereals dissolve in the milk. If you don’t drink the leftover cow juice, you’re not getting the fancy-pants nutrients!

2. Ice It, Ace It. Drink a few glasses of ice-cold water before and during exercise. Studies show that the cold stuff can improve endurance by about 23 percent. And ice water forces your body to expend calories warming it up, boosting your metabolism as well.

3. Lift, Damn It!. Verbally expressing emotion while lifting increases muscle strength by up to 25 percent. (Of course, it also increases your risk of being tossed out of the gym by the same percentage . . .) Or get someone to scream at you: You’ll be able to lift 5 to 8 percent more weight if you get verbal encouragement from a trainer or workout partner.

4. Bribe Yourself Fit. Bet a colleague (like the one who’s not so secretly gunning for your job) 50 bucks that you can stick to your workout program for 6 months. Studies show that those who do achieve an average 97 percent success rate. Alternate plan? Schedule your workouts, then put $5 in a jar for each one you make. Pledge the money toward something sweet, like a new bike or a trip to Vegas.

5. Pick The Red One. Red cabbage has 15 times as much wrinkle-fighting betacarotene as green cabbage. Red bell peppers have up to nine times as much vitamin C as green ones.

6. Spear A Hangover. To reduce the severity of a hangover, order a side of asparagus. When South Korean researchers exposed a group of human liver cells to asparagus extract, the extract suppressed free radicals and more than doubled the effects of two enzymes responsible for metabolizing alcohol.

7. Listen To Your Feet. If you can hear yourself running, you’re setting yourself up for injury. Pounding the pavement comes from bad form. Keep your feet close to the ground and use a quick, shuffling stride.

8. Don’t Buy Wheat Bread. Huh? Isn’t it good for me? Actually, “wheat bread” is often just white bread dyed with molasses to make it look dark. Look instead for “100 percent whole wheat” or “whole grain.” Even better: rye bread. Swedish researchers found that 8 hours after people ate rye, they felt less hungry than those who noshed wheat bread, thanks to rye’s high fiber content.

9. Cheat With A Dumbbell. Lift a dumbbell weight as many times as you can. Then, when you can’t complete one more repetition, use your free hand to help push your weighted hand through another rep. Once you’re at the top of the move, remove your free hand and slowly lower the weight. Studies show that negative resistance exercises like this are more effective at muscle building than standard exercises.

10. Dry Off Head To Toe. After a shower, you’ll prevent a chill by drying your head and neck first. You’ll also reduce the risk of anything nasty from the shower floor making its way up your body.

Change Your life First 10 tips

You need to change in order to grow. You can’t grow if you just stay where you are. You can’t grow if you don’t change the way you think and act. In fact, changing your life is a continuous process. It never ends. The moment you stop changing, you stop growing.

Here are ten tips to change your life:

1. Slow down
To change your life, you need time to think and reflect. If you are always busy, you won’t have the time to think about your life let alone taking action to change it. You won’t have the room to apply the tips below. So slow down and make the room for change.
Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast – you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.
Eddie Cantor
2. Be willing to change
Willingness is essential. It’s your life; nobody can change it but you. If you aren’t willing to change, then nothing in this world can make you do so.
To build the willingness to change, first you should realize that your life can be better than it is now. No matter how good your life is, it can always be improved. On the other hand, don’t feel hopeless if your life doesn’t seem good right now. You can always change your life for the better.
3. Accept responsibility
Accepting responsibility for your life is a must. Don’t blame other people for the bad things that happen in your life. Don’t blame your family, friends, boss, or the economy. Whether your life goes up or down depends on you and you alone. Once you take the responsibility, real change is within your reach.

4. Find your deepest values
Deep down in your heart, there are some principles that you know is true. Take the time to find them. What do you think is the most valuable thing in life? What principles do you think you must follow to live a fulfilling life? These are the values you need to align yourself with. Find them and remind yourself constantly about them.

5. Find your cause
Change is not easy because there is inertia you need to overcome. Just like a space shuttle needs a powerful rocket to overcome the Earth’s gravity, you also need a powerful source of energy to overcome the inertia to change. Your cause is the source of energy you need. Your cause can give you the strength to overcome the inertia.

6. Replace limiting beliefs with empowering beliefs
Limiting beliefs are among the biggest obstacles that hinder you from changing your life. You need to identify them before you can effectively handle them. To identify your limiting beliefs, observe your mind for thoughts that contain phrases like:
  • “I can’t …”
  • “I won’t be able to …”
  • “I will always be …”
  • “There is no way …”
Whenever you find one, write it down. After some time, look at your list. These are your limiting beliefs.
After identifying your limiting beliefs, you need to replace them with empowering beliefs. Write positive statements that counter the negative ones you wrote before and make positive affirmations using those statements. Do it whenever you realize that a limiting belief is at work.

7. Replace bad habits with positive habits
Besides identifying limiting beliefs, you should also identify bad habits you have. Are there habits that drag you down? Are there habits that you know you need to break? List them all.
Then, rather than focusing on breaking those habits, focus on creating new positive habits that replace them. For example, let’s say the bad habit is watching too much TV. Rather than focusing on reducing your TV time, you should focus on building a positive habit that will use the time in a better way. For instance, you might want to build the habit of reading.

8. Find a mentor
Finding a mentor can greatly help you improve your life. Not only can your mentor give you advice on what to do in certain situations, he can also warn you about possible pitfalls in your path. Without a mentor, most likely you will have to learn many lessons the hard way. Having a mentor will save you serious amount of time.
Getting a good mentor is not easy though. In many cases, you can’t just expect someone to invest his time in you for nothing. At the very least, you should show that you are an open-minded and teachable person. Furthermore, try to be useful to your mentor. Help him in any way you can to make his job easier. This way you send a message that you are a serious mentee that is worth investing in.

9. Have the right expectation
Having the right expectation from the beginning is important. Otherwise, it’s easy for you to be discouraged when things don’t go as expected. Change takes time, especially if you want the change to last. Having the right expectation prepares you to be persistent in difficult times.

10. Maintain the momentum
The most difficult part is always the beginning. Once you go through it, things will become easier if you maintain the momentum. Just think about pushing a car. The most difficult part is getting the car to start moving. Once it’s moving, pushing it will be easy as long as you don’t let it stop again.
Similarly, you should keep improving your life. Change your life day by day. As the quote above says, if you don’t change, you don’t grow.

 Thats all for today
